Total and permanent disablement

Total and Permanent Disablement cover

If an accident happens, the last thing you want to worry about is your finances. One of the types of insurance you can have through super is called Total and Permanent Disablement (TPD). TPD cover pays a lump sum of money to help support you and your family if you become totally and permanently disabled and are unable to work. The maximum amount of TPD cover you can access is $3 million.

When you take TPD cover out through your super, the cost comes out of your retirement savings, which minimises the impact on your household expenses today, but does mean there is an impact on your overall retirement savings.

How do I know if I’m eligible to claim?

To be eligible for TPD, you’d normally have an ongoing and serious injury or illness which stops you from working in a job you’re qualified for or from taking basic care of yourself (like showering or getting dressed).

You’ll need to have been off work for a minimum time of three consecutive months from the date of the incident which left you disabled. However, you can submit your claim earlier if you believe you’re totally and permanently disabled.

It’s important to understand that you only receive a one-off lump sum with this type of insurance, so once it’s been made, your cover will end – and you can’t claim again in the future.

Read our Insurance Guide for more information or check out how to make a claim .

Do I have TPD included in my super?

If you’re already a member of GuildSuper, checking whether you have insurance cover is simple. All you have to do is log in to your online account, click on the Insurance tab and review your current cover. If you’re under age 25 or if your super balance is below $6,000 then you won’t have automatic cover. You can still apply for cover by contacting us via your online account or via our online form.

If you’re considering making any changes to your cover, we recommend understanding the potential challenges you may have with reinstating your cover later. You can also call our team on 1300 361 477 to chat about how this works or get in touch with a qualified financial adviser for personal advice.
